Lemon Laws are a right every consumer has and you should fully understand your rights. What is a lemon law and how does it work? A lemon law protects the consumer against buying a junky automobile. Basically is a vehicle continues to have defects that weaken the value, safety, usage or overall structure. A good rule of thumb is if a car needs to be repaired more than four times for the same issue and the problem persists, you may qualify for the Lemon Law. Remember each state is different and has different ideas of what qualifies as a Lemon Law. Here is a good list of the Lemon Laws for each state - Lemon Law. If you qualify for the lemon law, you will probably need to hire a lawyer, if the dealership will not cooperate with you regarding your issue. Again each state is different and you must look further into the issue to see if you do need a lawyer for your case. If you do have a lemon, the first thing they will want is records. So remember keep all information and document everything. Make sure you have the dates, time, reason for the visit and why you brought your vehicle in for repair. Also keep track if you lost days at work etc. This will be very important to your case in court and a lawyer will have a lot easier time proving your case with documentation. Before you make a case and let emotion get the best of you, take time and understand your rights. Make sure you have a valid case and are not just having buyers remorse or something along that line. If you feel that you have a case and the dealership is not cooperating with you, contact the main manufacture with your complaint. Most of the time a manufacture will have a lot more pull and usually be on your side, as strange as that sounds. If the manufacture will not help with your lemon, contact a lawyer and move forward. Just remember as a consumer, you have rights.
